Nigeria Loses 15m Man-hours To ASUU, Doctors Strikes

Don says Nigeria lost 15-million man hours to Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and medical doctors strikes.
Prof. Teresa Nmadu of the University of Jos on Thursday said that Nigeria lost 15-million man hours to the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and medical doctors.
Nmadu, who lectures at the Faculty of Human Resource Management, made the disclosure when he delivered the 63rd inaugural lecture of the university.
The theme of the lecture was “The Job to be Done: How we work and ought to work’’.
She pointed out that “we are not yet there in terms of the required right attitude to work’’, adding that a lot of people were not doing what they ought to do due to many factors.
She said that generally, Nigerians had a poor attitude to value and volume of work being done, blaming it on the way they handled issues that bordered on work.
Nmadu said that for anyone to be fulfilled in life, there must be a focus on doing great works which according to her, is doing what you like to do best.
She expressed the fear that soon, most jobs would be replaced by what she termed portfolio jobs which incorporated job losses.
Nmadu called for a more robust human resource planning predicated on purpose and a high degree of obligation and necessities.
She lauded the efforts of the university at producing competent and credible graduates second to none in the country.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, described UNIJOS as having the capacity to generate knowledge needed to tackle some of the problems facing the country.
Mafuyai said that Nigeria looked up to the University of Jos to generate knowledge to keep Ebola and other deadly diseases out of the country.
He advised Nigerians to imbibe the necessary minimum hygiene practice in the meantime as a preventive measure for Ebola and other diseases presently ravaging the world. (NAN)

Mass Failure Saddens WAEC

West African Examinations Council, WAEC awarded the best three Benue State schools in the 2011 WAEC examinations and also expressed displeasure in the failure of candidates that write its examinations.

waec
The National Head of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, office in Nigeria, Mr. Charles Egurudu, has said the body is saddened by the failure of candidates that write its examinations.
Egurudu, who spoke yesterday at the award-giving ceremony to the best three Benue State schools in the 2011 WAEC examinations,  in Makurdi, insisted that Nigeria’s standard of education had not fallen.
He said: “We feel sad when students don’t do well in our examinations, but this does not translate to a fall in the standard of education in the country because it is not true.
“There is, however, the need for students, teachers and stakeholders alike to redouble their efforts to ensure improvement in teaching and learning in schools to enable us overcome the challenge.
“I also want to use this opportunity to state categorically that I never stated that there was mass failure in 2014 WAEC examination. All I said was that there was a slight decline in the number of students who passed when compared to previous results.”
He said the body had taken steps to improve the conduct of its examinations with the introduction of new innovations like the walk-in examination and the introduction of free distribution of high quality customised mathematical set for use by its candidates.
Similarly, a member of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of the WAEC endowment fund, Chief Anthony Nwadike, said the body was keeping pace with global trend by creating an endowment fund to encourage hard work and excellence among students.
Speaking, Benue State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Elizabeth Ugo, lauded WAEC for being consistent and steadfast in its responsibilities over the years.
Benue schools that received the awards included Mount Carmel Comprehensive Secondary School Otukpo, which received books worth $2,500 for coming tops in WAEC examination in the state while Bethel International College, Gboko and Anglican Secondary School received $1,500 and $1,000 worth of books for emerging second and third respectively.
